Day 337: Leah Sarat

These are stories and struggles worked out in gouache and ink, at the border between nations and in the places where generational trauma and collective healing collide. I paint infrequently, but images never fail to emerge at those times when words don’t cut it– in the summer when children were ripped from their parents in the name of national security, in the whistle announcing the passage of La Bestia at night, in the spark of magic when a loved own shows you how she and her mother before her broke their demons’ spells, in joyous fright at the possibility of new life, in the innocence of a child’s vision for breaking down the boundaries that separate us from the ones we love. Each image is an incantation, a prayer for liberation (scroll down to see all).
