As long as I can remember, I’ve made things with my hands. It’s both the challenges and the resulting products that I love. Solving puzzles, learning new things and excelling in skills motivates and inspires me. The fact that I can make a quilt from scraps of fabrics, a stuffed animal from some yarn and cotton, or turn a piece of white paper into an image that looks so real you want to touch it fills me with a wonderful sense of accomplishment.
Although my journey with colored pencils began with portraiture and still lifes, it wasn’t until I started to draw botanicals, that I really became passionate about drawing and about nature itself. Now, I find beauty and inspiration for my art whenever I’m outside. Whether it’s walking my dog or running errands in my car, I can’t help but marvel at all the natural beauty around me.
When I want further inspiration, I grab my camera and visit a botanical garden. There are so many incredible details that I would miss if it were not for my camera’s macro and zoom settings. The abundance of vibrant colors, textures and shapes found in nature fascinate me. I also love how sunlight makes petals and leaves translucent, thorns glow and creates the most interesting shadows. It is my hope to inspire others by sharing these natural wonders through my artwork.
