Day 186: Ariana Alexander

I am a 3D artist and animator working in the VR industry. I am based in Arizona and I work primarily with small companies, the most notable being Timefire VR which recently released a social VR application for the Vive called Hypatia. Hypatia was inspired by the Greek mathematician and astronomer by the same name and was built around the idea of creativity, exploration, and discovery in a virtual world. Stylistically, I work in a broad spectrum from realistic to very stylized, and I very much enjoy making characters “cute ” or loveable in some way, whether through their outward appearance or through their mannerisms or both. My work is inspired by works such as The Spiderwick Chronicles, Studio Ghibli films and other media, as well as by nature.

A 3D rendition of Hypatia of Alexandria, the first known female mathematician, philosopher and astronomer. She can be found in several locations within the Museum de Kurio, featured in the social VR application that shares her name. Modeled in MakeHuman and Blender and sculpted in Blender. Baked and textured in Substance Painter.

This mistress of the deep can be found in the canal system below the streets of Hypatia, a social VR application I help to develop at TimefireVR. Inspiration for this piece began while I was scrolling through images online detailing the creatures of The Spiderwick Chronicles, specifically the Caribbean Mermaid and the Pacific Sea Maid. If you’d like to learn more about Hypatia, visit timefirevr.com/hypatia. In the meantime, I encourage everyone to try viewing her in VR!
Modeled in MakeHuman and Blender. Textured in Substance Designer.
