I started working as an art instructor at the Hozhoni Art Program in Flagstaff, Arizona in 2008 or 2009. The program is a visual arts program for people with developmental disabilities. The job title is a misnomer. I was the one that received instruction- Creativity is contagious. Technical ability is overrated. Talent is code for willingness to make mistakes and go through the process. The big lie is that artists carry some sort of secret knowledge or inherent disposition. An even more heinous idea is that suffering leads to better or truer art. Just do the work. Hopefully one day the New Yorker (or Shelley Whiting) will call.
